THE recollections of the Thatcher years from Andrew Coles (Oxford Mail ViewPoints, June 14) are somewhat different from mine.

Far from being the disaster Mr Coles would like us to believe, I believe the Thatcher administration delivered strong foreign policy, responsible fiscal management and the strength and tenacity to deal with the crippling actions of the trade unions.

What emerged from her administration was a framework which allowed business to flourish, a reinvigorated and flexible workforce which attracted huge foreign investment in industry and gave opportunity to individuals who could, fair support to those who couldn’t and short shrift to those who wouldn’t.

Lady Thatcher would certainly be a guest at my dinner party, along with that other great Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. I assume that you will not want an invite, Mr Coles.
