I QUITE enjoy the hullabaloo of the World Cup even though I am not normally a footy fan, but do we have to hear so much about the money-making aspect?
Your report (June 11) said that Keith Slater, former president of Oxford Chamber of Commerce, claimed “the city centre alone will enjoy a £5m boost during the tournament, so will be looking to bring in £65m-plus”.
Well, that’s the main thing isn’t it, not the excitement of the sport and the fact that millions of people are enjoying the spectacle – despite England’s lacklustre performance so far?
Then again, perhaps Mr Slater isn’t the best person to be interviewed about the alleged boom for businesses because he goes on to say “don’t ask me how England winning affects women who have no interest in football buying dresses, but it does.”
Thanks for that valuable insight, Keith!
