OXFORD councillors and residents carried out an inspection of Port Meadow last night to maintain a longstanding annual tradition.

Colin Cook, the Sheriff of Oxford, fellow city councillors, the Freemen of Oxford and Wolvercote Commoners took part in the inspection of the open space to check that it is being properly maintained. Mr Cook said: “The inspection is very thorough and takes about two hours to complete.

“Port Meadow is a very popular open space, which is enjoyed by lots of different people.”

Following the inspection from 6pm to 8pm there was a game of Aunt Sally at The Plough pub in Wolvercote, between a team of Freemen and the Sheriff’s team.

Port Meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is common land.
