THERE was time for fun as well as time for lessons at this school.
The pictures were taken at West Oxford infants’ school in Ferry Hinksey Road in 1952 or 1953.
One shows them enjoying themselves in the playground, while the other was taken at a party, possibly to mark The Queen’s Coronation in 1953.
The pictures were sent in by Melvina Fawcett, of Springfield Road, Kidlington, whose maiden name was Milham.
Mrs Fawcett, who appears in both, writes: “The school had infants and juniors on the ground floor, senior girls upstairs and the senior boys were at the school in Binsey Lane.
“The toilets were outside in the playground as was the canteen.
“Miss Cox was the head teacher and the school had lots of stuffed birds and animals.
“There were pot-bellied stoves in the classrooms. We warmed the milk around them in the winter.”
The school is approaching its centenary, having opened on January 14, 1914, as West Oxford Council School.
Mrs Fawcett is uncertain about the names of some children. Can anyone confirm them?
