The Loire Valley is home to a variety of grape varieties, particularly sauvignon blanc that here makes wonderfully refreshing wines with delightful minerality which comes from the chalky soils of the region. The Loire’s cool climate results in ultra-clean dry wines that are perfect with a wide variety of foods, particularly seafood.
The Loire's Finest case costs £117 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie, Domaine des 3 Versants 2008: Basic Muscadet can be a rather dull experience, but wines made by the “sur lie” process are a very different matter. This is a superb example of a wine made in this way — full creamy and yeasty flavours are combined with a delightful ultra-fresh crispness that really refreshes the palate.
Sancerre Domaine Cherrier 2008: The Cherrier brothers own 11 hectares of land around the village of Amigny, near the town of Sancerre. They make top-class traditional Sancerre from sauvignon blanc grapes grown on the classic chalky soils of the region that shows refreshing gooseberry and blackcurrant fruit backed up by fine minerality. Superb with fish dishes and seafood.
Sancerre Domaine Cherrier Rosé 2009: This fine, dry rosé from the Cherrier brothers is made from the pinot noir grape and is an ideal food wine with flavours of cherry, stone fruit and minerals. This makes a perfect match with full flavoured dishes such as smoked fish, charcuterie and summer salads.
Les Quatre Pierres Cabernet Franc, Guy Allion 2008: This cabernet franc comes from the well balanced 2008 vintage which produced full-flavoured wines in the Loire and this one is no exception. Guy Allion has produced a wine that is full of juicy, clean blackcurrant fruit with wonderful minerality and a hint of woodsmoke.
