What vehicle do you drive?
One of my three classic vehicles is a Morris Eight Series Tourer manufactured in 1936.
How long have you had it?
Around four years.
How much did it cost?
Several hundred pounds and a lot more to restore it.
Why did you get this particular vehicle?
My wife suggested I should have an interest when I retired and this marque would be particularly applicable, as I was an engineering apprentice in the Nuffield organisation in the late 1950s.
What do you like most about it?
I like it because it was designed to good engineering principles which represent reliable and safe motoring. Also its use of materials and finishes which provided a very lengthy roadworthy life. It has simple mechanics and electrical features which are easily maintainable unlike very recent vehicle design.
What irritates you most about it?
There is virtually nothing that irritates me about the car, with the small exception that when I drive it on the highway there appears to be an excessive amount of other motorists who are impatient, wishing to race past me whatever road situation just because my maximum speed is about 50mph.
Is it good value for money?
If I sold it I might never regain the cost I have had to invest in it, but I still believe that both on this and my two other classics it has to date been money well spent.
Does it have a name?
None of my classic cars has been named.
What is your favourite memory of the vehicle?
My favorite memories of the car are the initial day of purchase and transporting it home on a trailer and then in addition the day its engine first ran and I road tested it.
And your worst?
Quite recently when its engine lost oil pressure and I knew it had bearing problems that I would need to solve by a major strip-down.
If you could own any vehicle what would it be? Forget modern cars, I would like in the future to have an earlier Morris such as an early 1920s Bullnose Cowley.
What was your first vehicle? How much did it cost and how long did you own it?
My first car was actually a Morris Mini van 1961 that I believe cost £315 as commercial vehicles at that time did not suffer purchase tax. I owned it for three years until I could graduate to a full saloon car – a Wolseley 1500.
