What a bizarre law reported in your Memory Lane pages (Monday’s Oxford Mail) in the case of men prosecuted 50 years ago for gambling on the verge of the highway.
Surely all drivers are gambling with their lives every day on our roads? Are they guilty of breaking this antiquated law too?
I also noted the bizarre case of an over-enthusiastic traffic warden who issued a parking ticket to a dustcart driver while he was emptying bins (Memory Lane, April 19).
Perhaps he should have been issuing a ticket for dropping litter on the highway, which a supposedly empty dustcart did while travelling between Eynsham and Standlake last week.
I followed this dustcart as I made my way to the recycling site at Dix Pit. At least 50 large items were sucked out of the carrier as it travelled between the villages.
Now West Oxfordshire District Council will have to pay someone to collect all that litter.
So is there one rule for the public about litter dropping and another for refuse collection services?
