I WAS amused to read that Farmoor Stores offers snoek (Oxford Mail, June 10).
During the Second World War it was offered as an alternative to more traditional types of fish, was not much liked and became a national joke.
Clearly we should have grilled it with the recommended herbs and apricot jam – except there wasn’t any apricot jam available.
We did have ersatz flavours – which were equally tasteless.
