Pupils at an Oxfordshire secondary school are following in the footsteps of Coco Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sarah Jessica Parker as part of an unusual science project.
Wheatley Park School is working with scientists from Oxford University on a project which will see pupils learning about the science behind perfumes, and coming up with their very own fragrances.
The Perfume Factory aims to evaluate the applications and implications of science on the perfume industry.
Sixth form pupils have already started working with scientists to learn some of the techniques behind making scents.
The scheme will now be rolled out across other age groups in the school.
Among the experts who will be working with the children is Dr Malcolm Stewart. He said: “Our project will bring to life what pupils learn in the classroom and help them understand the impact of science and engineering upon their day-to-day activities.
“Making these subjects relevant is how we demonstrate how vital they are to our lives.”
The project was funded by the Royal Society, which awarded the school a partnership grant of up to £3,000 to turn the project into a reality.
