Police are warning people to ensure they keep their pin numbers protected after a number of incidents in Oxfordshire.
Officers from the Cherwell priority crime team are investigating three reports that involve a gang of thieves who are observing pin numbers being entered in supermarkets in north Oxfordshire.
The gang, who have only targeted women so far, then follow the women out of the stores and distract them in order to steal their purses.
The distraction techniques have included asking for directions with a map, feigning illness and collapsing, and asking for change.
PC Richie Iwanoff, of the Cherwell priority crime team, said: “I would urge shoppers to be particularly vigilant when using chip and pin services and look out for anyone looking over your shoulder.
“Likewise I would urge people to lock vehicles even if only leaving it for a few moments. This is an organised group of criminals that can be easily stopped by simple crime prevention.”
If anyone sees anything suspicious, or has any information about these offences, please contact Thames Valley Police on 0845 8 505 505. Alternatively, you can contact the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
