THE Barracks Lane Community Garden, in Cowley, Oxford, is holding a ‘Chicken Day’ tomorrow to give people advice on how to keep the birds at home or on their allotments.
Julia Hollander, author of new book Chicken Coops for the Soul, is also giving a workshop on keeping chickens including topics such as housing, food, health, and social habits. Ms Hollander is also handing out advice on legal issues about home-grown eggs.
She said: “I decided to write a book about this after talking to people in the area.
“I realised that lots of people in the 1950s and 1960s kept chickens and I have told their stories in my book.
“Most people don't realise that you are allowed to keep chickens in urban gardens and on allotments. My new book gives all the information a budding chicken keeper needs.”
The Chicken Day runs from 11am to 5pm and also features face-painting for children.
