Oxfordshire County Council will need to save an extra £10.8m during the current financial year, it emerged today.
County Hall said the news comes following a Whitehall announcement about cuts in Government grants to local authorities.
Councillors and senior managers will today start to decide how and where the savings can be made.
Keith Mitchell, county council leader, said: "It is very unusual, if not unique, for a Government to require savings part way into a financial year.
"We must now work hard on how we will manage these extra cuts."
