We warmly welcome the weekly food waste collection that has been extended to virtually the whole of Oxford this week.
The prospect of food waste hanging around for two weeks understandably led to a lot of disquiet about new waste and recycling collections — not only in Oxford but in many other areas too.
The city has seen its recycling rates improve massively over the last few years and the weekly food waste collection could see recycling rates rise to 50 per cent or more.
That has to be worthy of celebration.
As with all these changes, it takes people time to get used to them. Once they are, we are sure people will respond well.
Charging for waste was not supported by our local councils but we do wonder whether it is worth considering a county-wide incentive scheme to reward those who do recycle the most.
