KNITTERS who meet for a natter at Oxford’s historic castle are calling on new people to join them.
The Wednesday knitting group, which has been running for the past two months, is made up of a group of people who enjoy a chatter and clacking with their needles and stash of wool.
From jumpers to scarves, babies’ bonnets to lacey evening scarves, women from across the city have been gathering to swap tips and exchange ideas.
Now they are looking for more knitters to boost their group, which meets between 2.30pm and 5.30pm at Carluccio’s in the Oxford Castle complex.
Last month founder member Gaynor O’Sullivan, who runs the Willows Yarns Stall at the castle’s arts and crafts market, welcomed her first grandchild Darcey into the world and has been busy with pink wool, knitting bonnets and baby booties.
She said: “Since we started a couple of months ago, the knitting needles and crochet hooks have been clacking ferociously at our Wednesday catch-ups.
“Everyone is at a different level and has different reasons for knitting, but we try to help each other create our own little masterpiece in wool.”
Mrs O’Sullivan, who lives in St Ebbe’s, added: “It’s really for people to come along when they want to – somewhere you can relax and talk about your hobby and talk to people who are like-minded. It also helps spread the word about the craft.
“Knitting means you can create something that you like. As with many things, everyone has something they enjoy doing and it expresses their personality.
“It used to be something that you had to do – it was seen as something unfashionable.
“But because we don’t have to knit now, people knit for pleasure.”
