Sir – Customers will obviously be delighted that the roundabout next to Sainsbury’s store at Heyford Hill is to be redesigned. However, traffic lights will certainly slow down traffic movements for non-customers at the roundabout. Another problem is that congestion may well be moved to neighbouring parts of the Oxford Ring Road. What steps is Oxfordshire County Council taking to avoid this happening?

One aspect that has been completely overlooked is the potential use of the Oxford- Cowley railway line to service the substantially extended store.

This rail freight line runs right next to the store, and a siding could be built to receive incoming goods. This would also reduce the number of lorry movements needed to supply this proposed mega-store. I assume that stores near to the railway in Cowley already have this facility.

Let us hope that our transport planners commence some joined-up thinking, and consider both our existing road and rail resources in their proposals.
