Sir – It is with regret that we, The Royal Oxfordshire Horticultural Society, decided at our recent Annual General Meeting to cancel the 2010 Flower Show and Charity Day. As most of you know, we have been holding the event, in partnership with the Oxford City Council, for the last 25 years in Florence Park at Cowley.
In the more recent years, the ROHS has organised the event with the financial support of the city council. In doing so, we have tried to maintain the ethos of a traditional flower show, ‘a village fete in suburbia’, with free admission to everyone. The planning for this year’s event was well under way when we learned that we would not receive any financial support from the city council.
We are a society manned by volunteers with a limited budget and unable to support the event on our own. The decision to cancel early in the year was to allow the entertainers and numerous charities to find alternative venues for what would have been an enjoyable day in early September.
The ROHS would like to publicly thank everyone for their support in previous years and their understanding of our actions this year.
Freddie Drinkwater Chairman ROHS
