A MOTORIST died after crashing into a railway bridge at Cassington, near Witney, yesterday.
At about 9.45pm, a red Ford Focus hit a wall on a humpback bridge on Burleigh Road, on the edge of the village.
The driver, a 57-year-old man from Yarnton, was declared dead at the scene.
Tonight, paint on the road marked where the vehicle came to rest.
Workers from Network Rail were also assessing damage to the wire fence which had been crushed in the smash.
Sgt Peter Jell, from Bicester Roads Policing, said he wanted to speak to anyone who saw the car before the crash and if they passed it once the crash had happened.
He said: “It is a quiet, rural back road which probably does not get a lot of traffic at that time of night.
“Someone stopped after the crash happened and called the police. We believe it was not long after it happened.
“He hit the edge of the bridge parapet.”
A spokesman for the Oxfordshire coroner said the man had not yet been formally identified.
Anyone with information about the crash should Bicester Roads Policing on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
