THE Rev Robert Sweeney had a head for heights.
He is seen with builder Ted Clarke putting in place a 100-year-old iron cross at the top of the central tower high above St Frideswide’s Church, off Botley Road, Oxford, in 1985.
The cross was originally placed beneath the tower, but the brackets holding it were rusty and it was in danger of falling to the ground.
As part of a £20,000 renovation scheme to deal with problems in the church roof, it was decided that the cross should be put on top of the tower.
Mr Sweeney, the vicar, said at the time that the work on the church roof was the culmination of a nine-year effort to fight 100 years of decay in the building.
