One of my favourite TV shows ever is the seminal and exceptional Freaks and Geeks, in which I always identified most with the hapless and supremely geeky Bill Haverchuck.
As a child I discovered the series of Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett and continue to adore them to this day. I’ve needed glasses since I was eight years old, I own more than a few comic books (and incidentally am eagerly anticipating the Edgar Wright directed film adaptation of Scot Pilgrim) and my favourite films include Blade Runner, the Alien films and the first two Terminator movies.
Basically I’m a geek, and I have been for most of my life.
With this information in mind I think you’ll be able to see why I was looking forward to a new night called Get Your Geek On (oh, and I once cried while watching My Girl...).
As it turns out, to enjoy Get Your Geek On you don’t actually need to have any of the above qualifications, but rather a predisposition toward lots of “bleeping” in your dance music.
In fact, while the night is new to Oxford it has been running with considerable success down in Bournemouth for some time now, and it’s easy to see why.
The excellent DJs, having proven themselves as talented mixsmiths, have clearly spent their time gaining a bit of a reputation, giving them an opportunity to build relationships within the dance community and the credentials to book big name acts to support themselves.
This week the headliner comes in the form of the superb Casper C, but if the names don’t impress you, don’t worry, because the tunes certainly will.
Other than that Baby Simple is much the same as it ever is.
The main room for dancing still has those bizarre sheets hanging from the ceiling giving the impression that the decorators have been interrupted by the night out; the toilets are still those bizarre Ally McBeal-style unisex ones, and drunkenness will still end up costing you a pretty penny.
Don’t get me wrong, I rather like Baby Simple. I’m fond of their small but cosy smoking area when so few clubs make any accommodation for me and my fellow filthy addicts, and I find the bar and its various rooms relaxing, comfortable and enticingly stylish.
This feels to me like a fantastic new night and a great opportunity for people to discover just how good this Cowley Road venue is.
