THE new design proposed for the Heyford Hill roundabout looks like a sensible option to improve traffic flow on a key section of Oxford’s ring road.
Alterations to improve access to the Sainsbury’s supermarket are long overdue.
And it is good to see that the supermarket chain is footing the bill for the roundabout work.
Oxfordshire County Council is also going to do its bit and create a new filter lane for traffic turning towards Rose Hill and Littlemore.
Unusually for an urban environment, there is room to provide this queue-busting measure without having to demolish homes or businesses.
As well as hopefully relieving congestion at the roundabout and further afield, the new design must make the junction safer.
The current layout and certain motorists’ foolhardy attitudes leads to all sorts of accidents and even more near-misses.
Of course, the construction work may lead to some short-term pain but the long-term gain will make it bearable.
And if it is going to copy the Green Road roundabout’s layout, can we call it ‘Hamburger Hill’?
