Having had to spend the entire match at Wembley on Sunday standing up, I make the following observations.
This was caused as a result of some fans near the front who decided that they wanted to stand.
As a result, hundreds, if not thousands of fans behind them had to stand if they wanted to watch the game, regardless of age or height, or whether they wished to.
Is this behaviour part of being a ‘proper’ fan? It shows an enormous lack of consideration for others.
If I had known beforehand, I would have worn a stouter pair of shoes.
Standing during the game is not permitted in seated areas at football stadiums, and in this case this rule was poorly monitored by stewards, if at all.
Perhaps many of these supporters are just too young to remember the terrible impact of the 96 deaths at Hillsborough in 1989, and the reasons for the introduction of the all-seater stadium. Safety for all.
Although happy with the result, it took much of the pleasure out of the day for many.
I do hope Oxford United take note of this and remind the fans when necessary.
