The disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion has been all but forgotten after Oxford United’s triumph in the play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.
Three superbly taken goals gave United the success they have been craving for the last four years — namely a return to the Football League.
In many ways, success in the Wembley play-off final is a bigger deal than actually winning the Blue Square Premier League outright.
There was no way more than 30,000 fans were going to to see United win the league at the Kassam Stadium.
The excitement of a trip to Wembley is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most football fans (twice if you support Oxford United).
It also brings with it extra high-profile games and some much-needed revenue for the club.
United will open their campaign in the Football League in August on an absolute high. With any luck, many of those who travelled to Wembley will stick with the team regularly, boosting attendances and propelling the team on to even more success.
Well done United and here’s to bigger achievements to come!
