Anyone who uses the Heyford Hill roundabout on Oxford Ring Road will know that it is not to be taken lightly. For starters, you need to watch out for those who do not use it regularly and are never quite sure where they should be for the Ring Road, Sainsbury’s or the Henley road.
No one likes Traffic lights, but pausing the traffic here may be helpful to everyone’s stress levels, particularly those trying to exit the Sainsbury car park.
The real test for the work proposed will be if it can alleviate some of the jams that build up at this point during rush hour. Traffic is often held back a long way towards Cowley and on the approaches to the Abingdon Road roundabout.
Creating a carriageway through the middle of the roundabout must increase capacity and will allow some of the traffic going in different directions to be separated.
With the improvements at Green Road roundabout, it has been shown that it is possible to make things better at a difficult junction on the Ring Road. Let us hope Heyford Hill is equally successful.
We are not so convinced by the Highways Agency plan for traffic lights at the A420 junction with the A34 West of Oxford. Was there really a compelling reason for traffic lights here? We fear that this will be one of those junctions where motorists complain that life was far better without them.
