The World Cup kicked off a party atmosphere in Witney last month and now the excitement is building as everyone gets in the spirit for the annual Witney Carnival next weekend.

Last year's event was dubbed one of the best in its history, so organisers have had a high standard to follow.

But with support from groups, schools, businesses and residents across the town, the carnival committee have once again come up with a vibrant mix of activities, shows and fun for all the family.

The carnival sponsored by the Oxford Mail's sister paper, the Witney Gazette, and 33 other west Oxfordshire businesses starts on Saturday at 11am, with the traditional procession of floats through the town.

Children from the town's schools will dress up in costumes and take part in hope of winning the best float award.

Judging of the floats and prize- giving will take place at The Leys at 12.15pm. It is here that the carnival will get into full swing.

Witney MP and Conservative leader David Cameron will officially open the carnival at 1pm, marking the start of arena events and activities that will run throughout the afternoon.

Some of the highlights promised for the day include a battle between inflatable giants and teams of eight taking part in the annual tug-of-war contest to win a barrel of beer.

A touch of Eastern flavour will be added to the carnival with belly dancing from the Witney and Carterton Hazzaz and Isisters dancers.

Witney Rotary Club, Witney Lions Club and Witney Air Training Corps are organising the carnival.

Last year, more than 3,000 people descended on the town for the event.

Chas Ford, of Witney Rotary Club, said: "I have to say I thought last year's carnival was one of the best let us hope this year will be equally successful."
