Sir – Roger Blackburn (Letters, May 13) understandably objects to standing ovations after concerts. Even worse, in my view, is the stamping of feet, creating a harsh cacophony that drives thoughts of the music one has just head from one’s head.

Sadly, this habit is prevalent at the otherwise excellent Sunday morning coffee concerts at the Holywell Music Room, where several of the offenders appear to be staff there. On Sunday, May 9, a particularly moving item by Chopin had just been concluded when the foot-stamping uproar broke out. How can these people claim to appreciate good music?
