Sir – Last week, Oxfordshire County Council registered Warneford Meadow in Oxford as a Town Green.
CPRE Oxfordshire would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Friends of Warneford Meadow who have campaigned tirelessly for four years to have their meadow and orchard recognised as a Town Green so that it might be protected from development for future generations to enjoy.
CPRE believed it was crucial to preserve this lovely area of open, semi-rural land in the heart of the city for recreation and for its ecological and environmental value, and we are pleased to have played a small part in the success of this campaign.
On June 27, CPRE is launching the Oxford Green Spaces Circular Sponsored Walk; a nine-mile walk linking up Warneford Meadow, Oxpens Meadow in the west of the city, and the Trap Grounds in the north (which secured Town Green status in 2006).
The walk is designed to raise awareness about the less well known and often threatened green spaces within the city and to raise funds for the Friends of Warneford Meadow, who still have legal costs outstanding and for the Friends of Oxpens Meadow, who are also campaigning for Town Green status.
For those who would rather just have a picnic and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of one of these green oases in the city, please come along between 10am and 4pm. There will also be children’s activities and information stalls.
