AN ALIEN created from recycled materials was the centrepiece of an Artweek exhibition at East Oxford Primary School.

The school, in Union Street, threw open its doors on Saturday and held a range of activities showing the children’s artistic efforts.

It was a double cause for celebration, as the event also marked the official opening of a revamp of the school play area.

School administration officer Pat Salisbury said: “It was a lovely atmosphere, so relaxed, with people sitting around, chatting and enjoying the activities.”

The play area was opened by local artist Helen Ganly, whose two children attended the school.

The school used to have just an expanse of bare tarmac, but that has been replaced by coloured patterned paving, a green grass mound, a pergola, wooden logs for the children to climb on, benches, large planters, and a water feature.

Mrs Salisbury added: “The children were having lots of fun.

“It is really lovely and I can’t wait to play in it myself.”
