Mark Webber maintains age and experience are helping him to keep his feet on the ground rather than getting carried away thinking about the Formula One world title.

Webber's stunning light-to-flag victory in Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix elevated him to the top of the drivers' standings, becoming the first Australian to lead the championship since Alan Jones in 1981.

"Of course, I am not 21, although I would love to be 21 again," said Webber. "But in the end I don't think I am losing too much by being a bit older."

Although level on 78 points with Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel, the 33-year-old has the edge on countback by virtue of his two victories to the one of the 22-year-old German.

Like Jenson Button last year, Webber is indisputably in the form of his nine-season, 144-race career, belying the misconception he is a journeyman driver.

"Jenson had a very good year last year, we all know that," added Webber. "He was written off in seasons before for lots of different reasons here and there.

"I still feel I am driving pretty well. The fire is still burning pretty brightly inside. I also have some wisdom and it's not held me back too much, so I will keep going and I am certainly not low on confidence at the moment."

But with 13 races still to run, Webber appreciates the hard work is only just beginning, adding: "I have done well for two races.

"In terms of good results, if I get three, four or five in a row, podiums or whatever, then that's a good run.

"So we will go to Turkey and we will keep chipping away because we all know things can change very quickly in this game. I have been around the block long enough to know that, so it's a case of feet on the ground."
