JUBILANT Oxford United fans were on cloud nine after last night’s play-off final win.
The 3-1 win over York City left more than 33,000 fans smiling as they left London.
But while some fans wiped away tears of joy, die-hard fan Pete Linzey was grinning through the pain.
The 25-year-old had suffered a burst appendix but discharged himself from hospital in Cornwall to be at Wembley.
He joined his brother-in-law Dan Vincent, 31, for a six hour journey to the Kassam Stadium to catch a supporters’ coach.
He said: “I have spent the last 24 hours in absolute agony but it was worth it. I am so glad I did it, although I think I might have to check myself back into hospital.”
Kai Collins, 11, from Bicester, was so inspired by the win he penned a poem on the coach home.
It ran: “It was pure mellow promotion fun as Oxford went into League Two, with class and style, making the Yellow half of Wembley cheer and smile.
“The final result was three – one.
“We’re going up…job done.”
Jane Stevens, from Marston, went to the Milk Cup final with her father Bert Thomas in 1986.
Now 92, he decided to listen to the game from home, and Ms Stevens said she went in his honour.
She said: “He said at one point he couldn’t bear to listen. He will be over the moon.”
Members of the Oxford Bangladeshi Association also returned to London after making the trip to Wembley in 1986.
Chairman Aziz Rahman said: “This is great for the club and great for the city.”
Bob Simmonds, 58, from Abingdon, said: “I was here in 1986 and I am here now. I am a good luck charm.”
Amy Warland, 25, of Headington, said: “This is the best £38 I have ever spent. What a day.”
Kenny Adams, 51, from Chalgrove, who watched the Milk Cup final with his teddy bear, said: “I brought Ted back to Wembley with me and he’s been a lucky bear again.”
Jez Allen, 48, who travelled to the game from Transylvania, said: “It was most definitely worth the trip.”
Matthew and Adam Green, from Merseyside, were among the fans in fancy dress. Matthew, 31, said: “We have been following Oxford all season – now I am definitely going to renew my season ticket.”
