AS A voter in Oxford East I must congratulate Andrew Smith MP on greatly increasing his majority – contrary to the national trend in the General Election.
In the city council elections, I note that Labour got 34.7 per cent of the votes cast, Lib-Dems 30.7 per cent, Conservatives 19.3 per cent and Greens 14.1 per cent.
Once again Tory voters got no-one to represent them on the council.
If the 48 seats were fairly distributed to the four main parties in proportion to the votes cast on May 6, Labour would have 17 not 25, the Lib Dems 15 not 17, Tories nine not nil, and the Greens seven.
In my view, it is totally undemocratic, for the Tory voters of Oxford to have no councillors.
Proportional representation should be adopted for all elections whether national or local. I have promised to send Nick Clegg MP £100 if he can get a referendum on the subject from David Cameron. Of course, the voters of the UK may prefer the present first-past-the-post system.
If so, I shall be even more delighted to pass on to the spirit world. That may be soon as I am now nearly 82.
M Hugh-Jones, Oxford
