In advance of our Vergelegen Estate South African Dinner Tasting at The Cherwell Boathouse hosted by winemaker Andre Van Rensberg on Tuesday, June 1, we are offering a taster case of some of the more affordable wines that we will be tasting. If you would like to come along please see details in the box on the left of this page. Vergelegen, meaning ‘situated far away’, was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long and fascinating history since that time. Vergelegen has twice won the coveted Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande Trophy for best red blend and readers of South Africa’s leading wine magazine, Wine, have voted Vergelegen the country’s best producer for five successive years. One of the Cape’s outstanding wineries, this inspiring property has the reputation for being one of South Africa’s leading ‘icon’ wine estates.

The Vergelegen Estate case costs £74 and includes two bottles each of the following three wines.

Vergelegen Chardonnay 2007: A restrained and crisp style of chardonnay that emphasises fruit over oak and is zesty and refreshing.

Vergelegen Flagship White 2007: A blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc, this complex and elegant wine has flavours of minerals and freshly cut grass.

Vergelegen ‘Mill Race’ Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2006: A blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, this wine has flavours of deep blackcurrant, ripe plums and cigar box — great value-for-money wine.
