Regional heroes are Australian wines and winemakers best defined by a distinct sense of place and expression — a perfect marriage of the right grape grown in the right region to produce a winning wine. There are over 60 wine regions in Australia so to help you sample some classic wines we have put together this mixed case of some of the more famous wines.
The Australia Regional Heroes case costs £79 and includes one bottle each of the following six wines.
Clover Hill Sparkling 2004, Tasmania: Sparkling wines are of great importance in Tasmania and are produced using the classic Champagne method of bottle fermentation. Clover Hill has a classic yeasty, bready nose followed by ultra-fresh crisp fruit and superb elegance.
Scotchman’s Hill Chardonnay 2006, Geelong: This is an ultra-cool region whose aromatic wines are amongst the best in Australia. This delightfully understated chardonnay has classic cool-climate Burgundian characteristics.
Cape Mentelle Sauvignon/Semillon 2008, Margaret River: Intensity and elegance are the characteristics of this classic blend made in this famous cool climate area. This famous winery has produced a stunning wine that has superb grassy fruit and zesty crispness.
TarraWarra Pinot Noir 2005, Yarra Valley: Yarra has achieved more with this difficult variety than any other wine region in Australia. Classic flavours found here include strawberry and plum which mingle beautifully in this stunning pinot noir.
Jim Barry ‘The Cover Drive’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Clare/Coonawarra: A combination of dark berries, chocolate and cigar box on the nose with superb concentration and flavours which range from blackcurrant to plum and red cherry — a superbly complex wine.
Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz 2006, Barossa Valley: The Barossa Valley is undoubtedly Australia’s most famous wine region and one taste of the Futures Shiraz shows you why. Deep rich, ultra-ripe fruit with flavours of spice and saddle leather make this a stunning example of shiraz.
