I was very interested to read Mrs Gill’s letter in Tuesday’s Oxford Mail in which she gave her opinions of the new Oxford West and Abingdon MP.
For the sake of a few votes, the constituency has lost a fine MP, Dr Evan Harris, who was not afraid to tackle the really thorny ethical problems of today’s society.
Some of the ‘knocking copy’ literature used against him was, in my opinion, utterly disgusting and not what my children expected to pick up from the doormat.
Certain elements of society seem to have targeted him and (entirely innocently) the Conservatives have been the beneficiaries. What is disappointing has been the number of people who have since said that they would have voted for Dr Harris but thought his re-election was a certainty.
Also, I have heard of a number of students who would have voted Lib Dem (on the tuition fees issue alone) who did not realise that they could not vote outside their constituency if they had not arranged a postal vote.
Really? What do they teach in citizenship classes at schools?
Am I alone in thinking our new MP sings flat?
