Buying a book may seem a strange thing to do when you want to repair your bike. But there’s obviously a market for such manuals, even though YouTube is full of ‘how to mend a puncture’ videos.
The Ultimate Guide to Bicycle Maintenance (Magbooks, £9.99) is written by Guy Andrews, a former road and mountain bike racer. It’s clear and fairly comprehensive, though with photographs of new-looking mountain bikes or drop-handlebar racing bikes, it’s really aimed at recreational cyclists, rather than those using a bike for commuting or shopping.
The old classic, Richard’s Bicycle Book, first published in 1972, is probably more useful for the city cyclist. It has been updated as Richard’s 21st Century Bicycle Book.
