“MY work here is done – now it is up to you.”
That was the message of youth worker Gary Hibbins to the community where he helped bridge the generation gap.
Harwell, near Didcot, took on Mr Hibbins, 25, three months ago to break down barriers between adults and young people.
Now all concerned say the Monday night drop-in centre Our Street Corner that he helped found at the Freeman Hall has made things better.
The 20 young people who attend are aged between 12 and 19. Several are not in education, employment or training, and previously spent their time hanging around. And adults were often too intimidated to approach them.
The youngsters have helped raise £6,000 to kit out the hall with table tennis, pool and table football, and regular workshops include DJ-ing and cookery.
With Mr Hibbins’ contract coming to an end, it is now up to volunteers to continue the success.
