LABOUR leaders on Oxford City Council are hoping to get a boost in the district election result today on the back of Andrew Smith's result.
While Gordon Brown is hoping to cling to power following last night's large General Election losses, the local party on the city council is hoping to pick up two more seats to give it an overall majority.
Currently the Labour party hold 23 of the council's 48 seats.
The Liberal Democrats hold 16 seats, the Greens seven, IWCA two, while the Conservatives have none.
However, the impact of the General Election, which could have doubled the number of voters who turned out at the city council elections from just 32.6 per cent in 2008, makes the election result much more unpredictable.
Oxford East MP Andrew Smith had thought to be under threat from the Liberal Democrats but he quadrupled his majority in the early hours today. The local Labour party is hoping those votes for him will go their way too.
Volunteers have just started counting the votes at Town Hall.
The first election result is expected at 3pm.
