A teenager drowned in the River Cherwell in Oxford tonight despite attempts by friends to save him.

It is understood the schoolboy and friends had gone swimming in the river before he and a girl had got into trouble, just before 6pm at a spot known 'the Rollers' at University Parks.

Friends managed to get the girl out but the boy - believed to be 15 and from Oxford - disappeared below the surface.

After an hour's searching, firefighters with an underwater camera found his body and, despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Inspector Tom Brooks said: "This was a tragic accident."
