I have to point out to Vim Rodrigo that the claim that he was a community policeman in Rose Hill was not due to me (Oxford Mail, June 19). That was a misprint.
In my letter, I pointed out that I was the person who carried out that role, but I am sure that Mr Rodrigo would have done a good job as either a Pc or a PCSO in his younger days as he has the community at heart.
Secondly, my namesake Carl Payne (Oxford Mail, June 21) raises his views on the apology made by the head of Oxford police to the unfortunate Sikh involved in a racist attack in Oxford. Surely Supt Jim Trotman's immediate apology should be enough?
The head of a department caring enough to become involved so quickly is a good omen for the people of Oxford from their police service. It also is perfectly normal for such apologies to come from the top.
I have no doubt Supt Trotman conveyed the feelings of those officers under his command. In the heat of the moment when the incident took place, an error was made, it has been acknowledged and all I am sure have learned from the experience.
End of matter, no need for any further action, surely? Mr Payne, of course, having been raised by me not to be afraid to air his views, even if they contradict mine, is only exercising his democratic right to express them a freedom of speech which I hope the police will continue to protect.
It is something we all need in the current mishmash of political correctness that sometimes is used to divert attention from the more important matters of life.
