Supermini buyers on a tight budget might like to take a look at the sharply-styled Chevrolet Kalos which gives excellent space and equipment at a bargain price.
The Kalos is far more contemporary than previous Chevrolet/Daewoo models, thanks to plenty of European influence in the design process. Excellent standard equipment includes power steering, six airbags and anti-lock braking.
The range-topping, 94 horsepower 1.4-litre SX adds air conditioning, alloy wheels, rear roof spoiler and central locking with remote control, and CD player, all for less than the most basic versions of some more mainstream superminis. The new Kalos three-door has a more sporty style than its five-door sibling. The car retains its compact dimensions, but the sporty packaging has been underscored by several new details, such as new-style bumper mouldings at the front and rear, incorporating an air dam at the front.
The cabin is spacious if a little plasticky, seats have pronounced side cushions for extra support, and the car rides and drives well around town, although the ride feels a little harsh on the open road. The three-door is pretty practical and for rear-seat passengers to enter and leave the vehicle, the front passenger's seat can be folded forward to the front with only one hand. When everyone has reached or left their seats, it returns easily to its initial position.
The steering wheel is rake-adjustable and the driver's seat is height-adjustable, so finding the right driving position is easy. For the three-door Kalos, the top of the rear headrests has been slightly flattened to improve the rear view.
Inside there is no shortage of storage space. Drinks cans and cups are held safely in place in fold-out cupholders on the centre console, or the recesses at the end of the central tunnel.
Additional storage space is available in generous door pockets, the glove compartment and an open shelf under the radio, as well as pouches on the backs of the front seats and the side of the passenger's seat. The front headrests are fitted with hooks to hold a small shopping bag. The three-door Kalos, which is also available with a 1.2-litre engine, complements the established five-door, which has been a world-wide hit. Since its introduction to the USA at the end of 2003 under the name of Chevrolet Aveo, it has become the best-selling entry compact car in the US.
