A power cut prevented some fans watching England launch their World Cup dream, but avid supporters were back to generate their own electricity last night.

Around 400 fans - and a drummer in a suit emblazoned with the St George's Cross - filled the Bullnose Morris in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, to cheer on England as they took on Caribbean minnows Trinidad and Tobago.

Landlord Mark Elliott sent supporters home disappointed on Saturday when a blackout left the pub without power, but hundreds flocked back last night.

Despite a drum and air horn keeping the fans cheering, frustration grew until Peter Crouch, and late on, Steven Gerrard, made sure every fan went away with a smile on their face.

After the 2-0 win, many relieved England fans were confident the Three Lions would reach the final.

Martin Woodward, of Cowley, said: "It's much better to watch when you are in the pub and even better when we win, definitely. You've got to believe we can go all the way now."

* Logistics firm Unipart in Cowley found ways for 1,400 staff to see yesterday's match conveniently.

The company issued about 140 tickets for its large plasma screen in the staff restaurant and then put up seven further screens throughout the building.
