The group supporting the construction of an animal research lab in the city centre is holding a second demonstration march through Oxford.

Pro-Test is hoping the march on Saturday, June 3, will attract even more people than the estimated 800 who took to the streets of Oxford for the group's first march in February.

Pro-Test founder Laurie Pycroft said negotiations with police over the route for the demonstration had gone well so far and he did not anticipate any trouble.

He said: "The march is going to be a similar format to last time and we will be generally supporting the lab again.

"Hopefully it will be bigger and better, and with any luck, just as peaceful as last time."

He added: "We do not want to impede people going about their everyday business, but equally it is important that we show our support for the lab's construction."

The march will begin at 11.45am in Parks Road, between Broad Street and South Parks Road. Speeches in Parks Road will begin at about noon.

More than 1,000 animal rights protesters demonstrated in Oxford last month against the construction of the £20m Oxford University laboratory in South Parks Road.

The scale of the demonstration prompted some city centre traders to complain about disruption to the city centre.

Speakers for the Pro-Test demo are still being confirmed, but the last event featured Dr Evan Harris, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, and neurosurgeon Tipo Aziz.

Police spokesman Rachel McQuilliam said: "We are working with Pro-Test and have another meeting next week."
