Sir, It is a real shame that Mr Leonard (Letters, May 5) chooses not to contribute to an adult debate over the future of the Worcester Street car park, but instead focuses his ire on his perceptions of FOXCAN's 'hidden agenda'. Surely not even he can fail to acknowledge that the site, as it currently stands, constitutes a pretty dreary introduction to Oxford for those walking between the railway station and the city centre.

Given the opportunity to regenerate this spectacularly unattractive district and I defy Mr Leonard or anyone else to suggest that the block between the station and Nuffield College is an architectural gem the restoration of the canal basin makes sense in terms of providing it with a sorely-needed focus.

Whether or not FOXCAN's outline proposals are viable in terms of their commercial, recreational and cultural aspects remains to be seen but, given sufficient support for something that offers a better option than the status quo, there is undoubtedly merit in evaluating them as part of the wider regeneration plan.

Yes, the existing car park serves a useful purpose for one sector of the community. Yes, FOXCAN's proposals need further technical and economic development, which will have to be done. And yes, we all need to engage in serious debate, rather than mud-slinging, in reaching a decision about getting the best for everyone from redeveloping this shabby part of the city.
