There was a predictable flurry of Tory successes when the first results for the elections to Cherwell District Council came in.
The Conservatives held on to Banbury Calthorpe with Colin Clarke gaining a majority of 521 over Labour challenger Henry Goodman The Tories also held Bicester West with Norman Bolster polling 1,292 votes to Labour challenger John Broad's 566.
In the Cropredy ward, the Conservatives held off the Lib Dems for a comfortable win for Kenneth Atack.
Deddington, Fringford and Sibford were also held by the Tories but the Lib Dems gained Kidlington South with Devena Rae polling 1,115 votes to the Conservative's Mary Young tally of 863.
