An Oxford man who has already saved thousands of lives in a region of Pakistan devastated by an earthquake is raising another £50,000 to build a school in the region.
Salman Khan, 34, wants to give up to 300 children in the North West Frontier Province an education.
Most of the schools in the province and the neighbouring Pakistani-administered part of Kashmir were flattened by the earthquake last October.
The fundraising project is the latest aid mission organised by Mr Khan, in conjunction with the charity Muslim Hands.
He previously visited the region to provide emergency shelters for more than 3,000 people.
He said: "The needs of the population in the affected area are unlimited, but resources are limited. There's a certain amount of aid still coming into the region, but a lot of that will go to rebuilding homes and houses.
"Setting up a school like this will be useful for a number of reasons. It's not just the children taught at the school who will benefit, but they could go back to their communities and some of them could help improve the state of their own neighbourhoods and communities.
"Without doubt the earthquake was a terrible thing, but it has given us a fresh start to build a school to open up opportunities to young children."
Mr Khan hopes the school could be open within three or four months. If it is successful he wants to build more, and forge links with schools in Oxford.
He said the name of the school could have an Oxford connection, to reflect the large number of donors from the city who have contributed to the scheme.
He added: "The plan is to start the school off for younger children and then add three grades each year."
"The way the international media works at the moment is that it will focus on an issue of topical importance for two or three weeks and then something else will become important.
"Even though the situation in Pakistan is not getting much coverage in the media, problems still exist."
Mr Khan, who works as an economic development officer in Oxford, has given up hundreds of hours of his own time drumming up donations to help people in Pakistan.
If he reaches his £50,000 target to build the school, it will take the total amount he has raised so far to more than £100,000.
He added: "I always look at people who are worse off than me - and there are a large number in the developing world who are - and I thank God for what he has given me.
"I feel I have to try to improve the condition of less well-off people than me to whatever degree I can."
