A man is calling for action to clamp down on motorists who try to "break the world land speed record" near a Witney roundabout.

Gordon Clack, of Witney Road, Ducklington, said cars constantly broke the 30mph speed limit on the stretch of road leading from Chalcroft Close to the A415 roundabout next to the Four Pillars Hotel, at the junction with the A40 Witney bypass.

He said: "I'm concerned about what seem to be attempts at the world land speed record. Motorists travelling in both directions have an appalling disregard for the 30mph speed limit. Sometimes they go as fast as 60mph.

"It's an accident waiting to happen, particularly at Moors Close, where schoolchildren from nearby estates emerge, often without looking, on to the main road to Witney."

He called for officials to monitor the road and carry out speed checks on traffic.

He has contacted Oxfordshire County Council's highways department to ask for action.

Steve Wood, the council's speed management strategy officer, said checks and monitoring could be carried out, but the council did not have the budget to install traffic-calming measures.

He said: "There's one speed indicator device in each district council area, which is used on a rota basis around the towns, so that will come to the area at some point.

"We can loan out posters, which can be put up at the roundabout. They have proved quite effective in the past.

"We need to establish for ourselves if the cars are speeding. Hopefully, we will be able to do some form of short-term data collection.

"The difficulty is that we have to concentrate our budget on roads which already have high casualty rates.

"We don't have the money to put in anything physical, such as traffic calming."
