FUTURE Lord Mayors of Oxford will have good cause to turn to pedal power when they accept the chain of office. For from now on they will have a mayoral bicycle at their disposal alongside the Lord Mayor's 'green' Toyota Prius.
The bicycle was presented to the current Lord Mayor Bob Price, an enthusiastic cyclist himself, by members of Cyclox, the cycling campaign for Oxford.
The group says it has been so impressed by Mr Price's determination to cycle to engagements throughout his mayoral year that they decided that future Lord Mayors should be encouraged to follow in his tyre tracks.
Cyclox chairman, James Styring, said: "It's a gift to all future incumbents of the office, whatever their political persuasion."
The £300 Claud Butler bicycle is suitable for men and women, with three-speed gears making it easy to operate for any mayoral cycling novices. It is also fitted with panniers suitable for speeches and mayoral robes.
