Sir, Bill Leonard's letter (April 21) deserves a response from FOXCAN (Friends of the Oxford Canal Basin). The cost of reinstating the canal basin is not going to be borne by "the Oxford ratepayer". It will be part of the overall cost of the West End Development, which will be funded from independent sources.
Further, the basin would be neither a "small pond" nor a "flooded car park." It is planned as a pedestrian area, with a caf and other facilities, around the restored Georgian Y-shaped wharf and turning basin.
This will, we believe, provide a new focus for the whole community, not just for Mr Leonard's "odd boater".
