Sir, While supporting John Linton's suggestion that the Martyrs' Memorial "be re-dedicated to include all who suffered for their faith, whatever their religion" (Letters, April 21), I must take issue with his judgement on Elizabeth I.
Professing the "heretical" "New Learning", Elizabeth was in a very precarious position. Religious plotting, of whatever persuasion, was rife in this country, and not just the product of paranoia.
Inevitably, if regrettably, at times Elizabeth had to resort to ruthless measures.
To state, as Mr Linton does, that Elizabeth was "just as bad" as her half-sister, the near-psychopathic Mary Tudor, is an affront to one of our greatest monarchs.
