Oxford will become an alcohol-free zone after city councillors backed calls from the police for fresh powers to tackle nuisance street drinkers.
The blanket ban, which will come into force later this year after a period of statutory consultation, will not mean responsible on-street drinking is banned in the city, but will make it easier for the police to deal with those causing "alarm, harassment or distress" when drinking openly.
