Sir, Shouldn't The Oxford Times be supporting our city's largest non-professional theatre company? Lady Windermere's Fan at the Oxford Playhouse has been my first production with the Oxford Theatre Guild (hopefully the first of many) and I have been astonished at the level of energy and commitment that members of the Guild have demonstrated since rehearsals began.
The production has had packed Playhouse houses laughing and cheering with delight every night an incredible achievement for a diverse group of Oxonians with limited theatrical experience. Jeremy Smith's tawdry review (Weekend, April 14) didn't even mention the Guild, or that the cast and crew were local people who have dedicated a large amount of their spare time to entertain their community for no material gain.
Maybe next time The Oxford Times could send a reviewer with a bit more community spirit and, should the Guild be presenting another Wilde, show a modicum of understanding about the playwright's work.
